Aspiring Photographer & New News!

So I got a job working from home! It's great I'm a web editor/writer. I'm thinking of picking some extra work from home stuff so I can put aside $ for X-Mas and traveling.

Also, I'm indulging in one of my (many) passions: Photography. If anybody can give me tips on how to get better, let me know as I'm trying to sell my pics on photostock.
I started the big task of looking on other peoples blogs and omg there are alot of them. I started writing this blog to put in my profile for future web jobs but now I treat it like a journal. Sometimes the things I write I don't want anyone to see, other times I do. When I go on someones blog
I almost feel like I'm intruding into their private space. Most of them are awesome and I'm jealous of how nice they are. Any more I don't have a really exciting life but when I go on other blogs these people travel all over and take great photos, I want to do that (as I stomp my feet to the floor and cross my arms). One day I will be proud of mine-it will take me time but, I will get it great to!

Sitemeter sucks! Does anyone know of a good stat taker, I need to know where people are coming from. Thanks and have a good Friday!

The last images that I sold were on slide film that I shot over the course of a day in the middle of winter. The cost of film and development put me off for a while until I went digital.

Getting better at photography is like anything else; you need to practice and experiment. It's even easier now that everything is digital (you don't waste as much money). Only use the manual setting, and print out your best work.

Make a plan for a week to go out and shoot a variety of media from the micro to macro, abstract to mundane. Take the time to compose your shots one day, then randomly hit the shutter the next.

Cheers

Thank you so much! I really like the idea of having a plan, that suits me. Can you tell me what camera/s you use or recommend?

I have a Canon D30, but Pentax and Nikon make good cameras as well. However, it's all about the lenses. Get a decent body, but spend the majority of your money on the glass.

You may wish to start out with zooms that cover a range from 28mm-85mm and 100mm-200mm (or similar). The lower the f-number the better (e.g. f/2.8, f/4, etc). Online reviews will tell you the best lenses for a particular brand. For example, with Canon it's the "L" lenses. Expensive, but high quality.

After you do some research online, go to a store and play with the cameras for a while to determine which one suits you best.

i have a nikon d70 with a 18-70 zoom...GEt the best lenses you can afford.Dont worry about the body-its the lens that counts most. Also lenses hold their value and bodies dont so buying the latest fancy body is pointless since you can buy an older canon/nikon digital slr body for cheap and use most of your money on quality lenses...Zoom lenses are so-so in my opinion.I should have spent good money on a great lens and bought a used body.My dx18-70 zoom is nowhere near as good as my manual slr lenses....photo.net is a good website...

also stay with the old brands nikon, canon, minolta that have been making quality equippment cameras for generations.Dont buy kodak, fuji etc...As well keep in my mind that with some companies like canon, only brand new lenses will work with digital camera bodies. With nikon digital you can use older lenses but you will lose a lot of capabilities such as metering etc...
For me i like my old simple and relatively inexpensive nikon set up.Nikon FE,50mm nikon f1.8 lens,24mm D 2.8 lens,75-150 zoom lens.Very sharp pictures. And possibl the best and most simple setup was my minolta maxxum 7000 with 28-135 zoom. That camera took spectacular pictures-either that or i was extremely inspired, lucky etc.Its too bad photo processing is a pain but i think it forces you to take better pictures-I dont know.I havent been really inspired photographically for some time and have never printed a digital shot since i can just instantly see it on my monitor-different feel than seeing it printed on paper.
Wide angle lenses are very expensive for digital.
I can use my older 24mm lens on my digital d70 but it is only a 36 mm when you put it on a digital body.Digital cams increase the zoom on lenses by 50%.

Anon-Yes, I live in Telluride up in Mountain Village. I could not ask for a more beautiful place! Where do you live? I lived all my life in Colorado but only about 3 years in Telluride. The people are so laid back-it's awesome! Do you have a blog or web page?

I live in LA.No blog or website.
I remember driving up LAST DOLLAR RD(?) in early june and stopping by the road to walk into a field and sit down and absorb the spectacular snowcapped mtn views. It felt like i was in the swiss alps.I dont think ive ever been more blown away by scenery. The backcountry of Maroon Bells is equally insane.Dallas Creek divide and ridgway area are awesome as well.I remember driving up a side road near the DC divide and reaching the top of the road where there was this futuristic, strange looking house. An incredible view of the sneffels range(?).Later on i saw a show on TV about Dennis Weaver and him showing off this same house that he lived in!
Colorado rocks and the people are genuinely nice.Hopefully if gas stays low i will make another car trip in late may to the four corners.
BTW,i am still blown away by the election.Awesome.An incrdible moment, turning point for this country. The symbolism is enormous.Probably the biggest political event in this country's history-400yrs in the making. The world is envious, proud of us.It shows us as the nation that leads in ability to change, reinvent itself.Im still stunned and cant beleive it.MLK,was inspirational and they killed him but this election realized his dream.40yrs later!Im still in shock.
Probably the first time in human history that a person from the southern hemisphere(origins) has led a country from the northern hemisphere. It blows me away and all these countries who ve been pissed at our foreign policies must be shocked and impressed as well.Good Times ahead!
